Rigged giveaway? How to verify a draw was fair

The warning signs of a shady giveaway and how a verifiable draw with a public seed works — one anyone can recompute on their own device.

"The winner turned out to be the host's cousin." We've all seen a giveaway that smelled off. The problem is that in most social media giveaways it's impossible to prove otherwise: there's no way to audit how the winner was picked. This post covers the warning signs of a shady draw and how a verifiable one works.

The 5 warning signs of a shady giveaway

  1. Nobody knows how many people entered. If the post has 8,000 comments and the draw was "among commenters", did all 8,000 enter, or just a sample?
  2. The result is a screenshot. An image takes a minute to edit. A screenshot proves nothing.
  3. Nobody saw the wheel spin. If the draw happened in private, the winner may have been chosen beforehand and the animation was just theater.
  4. The rules changed after publishing. Terms that appear, get edited or vanish as convenient.
  5. There's no way to repeat the process. The definitive sign: if nobody can reproduce the draw with the same data, all that's left is trusting the host's word.

What makes a draw verifiable

A verifiable draw rests on two pieces:

  • A public seed: a random number (256-bit in Cuki) generated at draw time and published with the result. The seed determines the draw order in a reproducible way.
  • The canonical participant list: the exact list the draw ran on, frozen. If someone touched it afterwards, the recomputed result would no longer match.

With those two pieces, anyone can recompute the draw and get exactly the same result. There's no need to trust: you verify. It's math, not a promise — here's how transparency works in Cuki.

How to verify a draw made with Cuki

  1. Ask the organizer for the proof or the verification link (every Cuki draw generates one).
  2. Open the verification page: you'll see the seed, the participant list and the result.
  3. Verification recomputes the draw on your own device with that data and confirms whether it matches. No sign-up, nothing to install.

If the result matches, the draw was fair: nobody could handpick the winner or edit the list afterwards.

For brands: transparency is also marketing

If you run giveaways as a brand or agency, verifiability isn't just defense: it's content. Announcing "you can verify the result yourself" projects a seriousness no competitor with an opaque wheel can copy. And if the giveaway runs on an Instagram post, import the comments in order so the list is beyond dispute too.

Drawing from your own list? The random name picker is free, no sign-up, and every draw ships with its public seed and proof.
